The purpose of Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy is to provide an intellectually and academically rigorous pre-college preparatory education for male students. As a “school of choice,” BDJ offers a program for male students, eligible to attend any Baltimore City public school, focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). BDJ’s curriculum is designed to instruct scholars in a manner that will allow them to meet or exceed college preparatory school entrance standards, thus increasing their choices for post-secondary education or career paths. The uniqueness of the “BDJ Way” is that BDJ scholars attend school year-round and for longer days. Specifically, scholars attend school for 220 days of instruction, 40 more than required by the State of Maryland.
Bluford Drew Jemison is a public charter school, as such Maryland Charter School Legislation Statute § 9-102(1-13) specifies enrollment in public charter schools is open to all students on a space available basis and admits students on a lottery basis if more students apply than can be accommodated. BDJ’s lottery must be conducted for every space in each grade, available during the enrollment period. The BDJ lottery procedures apply to:
BDJ-East: 7th and 8th grades
BDJ-West: 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th
The BCPSS Choice lottery process procedures apply to:
BDJ-East: 6th grade
BDJ-West: 6th and 9th grades
